The Hounds are
simple animals so the trail need only be set with a few
trail markers, as above.
An
example (not to scale!) of a run could be:
Run
starts at (1).
Front-running hounds reach the check (2) and
start "checking".
Some hounds may find the trail which ends as
a false trail at (3) and have to head back to the
check (2).
Other hounds may find the On Trail at (4) and
continue the run again.
At the end of the On Trail a bar is found at (5)
indicating that the On Trail is somewhere back
down the trail.
The On Trail is at (6) which then leads to the
second check (7).
The trail leads to a falsie (8) but the On Trail
is at (9). This trail leads to a point where the
paper leads home (10).
No need to take 5m higher numbers into the jungle with you. Just use
the trail makers as shown above!!
What
you should bring to a run:
Penang
International Hash Hounds run mostly in the jungle so a pair of running
shoes with good grip is a good idea (especially when it's raining -
shiggy!!). You may want to carry some water in case your're thirsty.
Also if you think you may be a slow runner carrying a small torch could
be useful. However, the Hare or Bunny of the day should give advise
whether the run is short, medium or long so you can decide yourself
what to take on the run. The run fee is RM1, beer and softies are available
from the Beer Wagon so bringing some cash would be useful!
Hounds'
Trail Howls:
"Are
you?" or "Hear You?" - Howled
by the pack to the front-running Hounds to ask "are you on the
trail"
"On
On" or "On Paper" - Howled by the
front-running Hounds to say they are on the trail
"Checking" - Barked by a front-running Hound who has reached a check or bar and
is looking for the On Trail
"Check
Back" - Howled by a front-running Hound normally when finding
the trail is false and the Hounds should go back to the check and look
for the real On Trail
"Passing
(left/rignt)" - Forewarning to a slower Hound that you
are going to pass them on a narrow trail
"Head" - obstruction at head height i.e. branch
"Foot" - Obstruction at feet level i.e. vines, roots etc.
"Prickles
(left/right)" - thorns, machine-gun etc
"Shiggy" - Trail is slippery (especially muddy)
